Taraba State Government is to partner with Technology Incubation Centre Jalingo to train youths on the different technology-based items such as Production of household products.
Youth unemployment has remained a major challenge of development in Nigeria and in particular, a trigger for conflicts in North-Eastern region. The challenge is complicated by the fact that the youth in the region represent a large proportion of the local population and are largely unskilled with the consequence that they are unable to find gainful employment either in the corporate sector or as self-employed persons.
These challenges endanger the achievement and delivery of development objectives contained in the country’s poverty reduction programme especially as regards the goals and targets of MDGs 1.
The Technology Incubation Centre in the State was established by the Federal Government as a direct response to youth unemployment and conflicts in the region, with programmes for youth empowerment through technical and vocational skills acquisition which will qualify these youths for productive work after training.
The State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hon. Hassan Hamman Gassol disclosed Government plans to partner with the Centre when he visited the Centre recently to ascertain the level of development at the Centre.
He was received by the Managing director, Mrs Hussaina Bakari who conducted him round the various production units such as ceramics production unit, Honey processing unit, fabrication unit and Aluminium products unit. The Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Amos Wanmi and some directors in the ministry.
Mrs. Hussaina Bakari said, “Modalities should be put in place to ensure the centre is properly utilized to train Taraba youths on the production of household items like paint, cosmetic productions and fish forming”
The Commissioner thanked the Managing Director for accepting their proposal and also said that women in the state would soon be trained in the aspect of quality soap making and fish farming.
