The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF has declared its intention to partner with the Hope Afresh Foundation, Taraba in bringing succour to children and women at the grassroots.
Receiving the “Advocacy Group on Hard-to-Reach Health Project and One Main PHC Per Ward” at the Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba Conference Hall, Jalingo, Wife of the Taraba State Governor, Barr. Anna Darius Ishaku expressed joy over the visit, stating that a lot has been done by the Foundation to draw support from the International Community, other Organisations and individuals.
She stressed that having UNICEF come to her doorstep to support the State through its programmes and partnership with her, was reassuring.
While assuring them of 100% support, Barr. Ishaku said if she had known about them earlier, she would have began work with them right from the beginning, stating however that it was not too late.
The Governor’s Wife, who said her Medical Rescue Outreach is meant to cover the 16 Local Government Areas, declared that the programme is slowed due to the fact that the budget was beyond her expectations, adding that it is a thing of joy to see people come around to show interest and support.
She further assured the Team of the Governor’s continued support as well as further discussions on ways of collaboration.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation, Dr. Halima Abdu explained that the programme was targeted at improving the health of women and children in the State, stressing that UNICEF had provided the money, commodities, technical support, employment and means of reaching 7% of the population in the State.
According to her, about 1,034 Primary Health Centers, PHCs, scattered across the State have limited or no personnel at the grassroot level, hence the programme of UNICEF to position Staff in at least one PHC per ward for effective health management.
She added that the programme covers IDPs and Maternal Mortality issues,revealing that the Federal Government has approved funds for the take off of the programme in Taraba State but requested that His Excellency put in a word for the release of the fund.
She commended the effort of Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku at restoring UNICEF presence in the State after one and half years.
Dr. Halima Abdu, noted that the Governor’s support will include; establishment of an Agency for them, provision of accommodation, reactivation and renovation of the School of Nursing, Commissioning of Takum General Hospital, waver to Nurses and creating an enabling environment for partnership.
She further appealed to her Excellency to assist in providing furniture for the existing accommodation as well as provide mobility for the team which she described as part of the State’s counterpart funding for the programme.
