The Member Representing Wukari/Ibi federal constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Danjuma Shiddi has said the Federal Government has approved the construction of a bridge across River Benue in Ibi Local Government Area of the State at the cost of N57 billion.

Danjuma who spoke to Journalists in Jalingo through his Personal Assistant, Mr. Sendere Danladi said he had moved a motion for the construction of the bridge in January 2016 which finally got the endorsement of the federal executive council for the award of the contract last week.

According to him, the absence of the bridge across the River Benue at Ibi has caused untold hardship to the people of Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency and other commuters who use locally constructed canoes to cross and connect between Taraba and Plateau States, using Ibi Shendam road.

The lawmaker noted that many lives had been lost in effort to cross the river as well as valuable travel time. He commended the President Muhammadu Buhari led  government for considering the project which he said will boost economic activities within the two states when completed.

Shiddi also thanked Governor Darius Ishaku for his support as well as embarking on people oriented projects that are already transforming the social and economic sectors of the State.

He explained that the Federal Ministry of Works in 2004, awarded the engineering design contract for the bridge to MESSRS ICECON NIGERIA LTD, an engineering consulting firm, but no budgetary provision for the construction of the bridge was made.

Special Adviser to the Aku Uka of Wukari and Chairman Taraba State Council of Chiefs, Dr. Shekarau Angyu Masa Ibi, on Media and Legal Matters, Barr. Danjuma Adamu lauded the Federal Government for considering the project, describing it as long overdue.

“We have been agitating for the construction of the bridge across River Benue at Ibi since the 1970s because of the economic importance of the bridge.

“We are happy that this administration has found it expedient to award the contract.

“When completed the bridge will serve as link between North East, North Central and South-South states,” he said.
