A team of policemen being accompanied by some local vigilantes were on Thursday afternoon attacked in Lau LGA of Taraba State, leaving five of them dead while two others escaped.
In a press statement by the PPRO, Taraba state command of the Nigeria Police, David Misal, released on Friday, confirmed the attack and says a ‘manhunt’ is on to apprehend the hoodlums.
“Following a distress call of sporadic shooting heard at a place at Bujum Ladi, Lau LGA, on 6 September, 2018 at about 1430hrs, a team of five policemen led by a Divisional Crime Officer DCO ASP Kilobas Iliya, accompanied by three vigilante men were drafted to the area. While on their way, they came under attack by suspected herdsmen. Consequently, ASP Kilobas Iliya with two others and two vigilantes were killed and two arms, one AK 47 rifle, one service pistol were carted away by the hoodlums, while two others escaped”.
According to the the police official, the Commissioner of Police, David Akinremi, has ordered immediate investigation into the matter by deploying the deputy commissioner of Police in charge of Intelligence and Investigation DCP Musa Baba to carry out full scale discreet investigation into the matter while manhunt of the perpetrators is been embarked upon through massive deployment of more personnel to the affected areas”.
Meanwhile, member representing Lau constituency and Majority Leader of the Taraba state House of Assembly, Joseph Albasu Kunini, has condemned the killings. Kunini said crises was inevitable in a society but that he would do all he could to defend the interest of his people.
He however, gave kudos to the governor for his pragmatic approach and doggedness in the fight against insecurity in the State.
