The World bank through Youth Empowerment and Social Support Operations (YESSO) in collaboration with the Taraba state government on Friday commenced the training of 1,500 youths in community development services.
Speaking during the flag off of the training at Mararaban Apawa in Lau Local Government Area of the state, Head of Unit, Public Workfare of YESSO in the state, Dr. Ephraim Jen said the programme was design to check youth unemployment and restiveness in the country.
He noted that the youth constitute 51 percent of the nation’s population and if not well managed could constitute nuisance and increased criminality in the country.
Jen explained that the world bank and the federal government have noticed this scenario and have come up with the project in collaboration with State governments to provide temporary labour intensive jobs known as Public Workfare to check youth restiveness.
“The youth who would be paid a monthly stipend of N7,500 would be deployed in cleaning of public areas, rehabilitation of community feeder roads, reforestation, gully reclamation, construction of market stalls among others.
“The 1,500 youth who commence training today were selected from various background across six local government areas of Lau, Yorro, Ibi, Wukari, Bali and Gashaka LGAs and another batch of 1,500 will follow in the second phase.
“Provision has been made in the 2019 budget to engage 8000 more youths across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state,” he said.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Mr. Usman Matu in a remark said the Taraba State Government in recognition of the positive impact of the programme promptly paid counterpart funds for the take off of the programme in the state.
“The programme is in line with the rescue mission programme of His Excellency, Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku who has done so much in youth empowerment,” he said.
He called on beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity to better the livelihood of their families.
Matu commended the Federal Government and the World Bank for embarking on the public workfare programme in the state, noting that the programme will create job opportunities and reduce poverty among the youths.
