Text of Press Conference on the Position of the PDP on the Unfolding Events Relating Illegal Invasion and Violent Attack on the Residence of the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku by Police Operatives.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been following with keen interest the unfolding events relating to the illegal invasion and violent attack on the residence of the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Arc. Darius Ishaku, by Police operatives, who claimed to have been detailed by Presidential authorities.
Nigerians can recall that at the wake of the attack, on June 11, 2019, allegedly led by one Police DSP Edwin Oruakpa, the PDP charged the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to immediately get to the root of the matter, expose the actual forces behind the invasion and their real intentions, as well as to bring all the culprits to book publicly.
The PDP however states in clear terms that it is not satisfied with the manner with which the Federal Government is handling the issue. Already the poor handling of the matter is now sparking off suspicions of a creepy ploy to suppress facts and divert public attention from the questions surrounding the unlawful assault.
That invasion, as you all are aware, is in direct violation of the Governor’s immunity under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), prompting many Nigerians to point to no other motive other than a deliberate and calculated attempt to intimidate and hurt the person of the Governor of Taraba state, Arc. Ishaku.
This is especially as the invading operatives had ferociously stormed the residence, threatened the occupants with AK 47 rifles, violently broke the entrance doors, manhandled the governor’s son and carted away valuables belonging to the governor and his son, after finding nothing incriminating in the residence.
The poor handling of the matter is already heightening apprehensions in the public space that the invasion was primarily designed to setup, frameset upriminate and smear the image and popularity of the Governor of Taraba state; as part of the larger plot to harass, hassle, intimidate, persecute and distract PDP elected officers and bring them to public opprobrium.
There are already fears that the invading operatives may have planted incriminating items or even compromised the security architecture of the residence to facilitate a sinister plot.
The PDP is therefore worried that the Federal Government and the Police are yet to provide answers and come clean on this matter.
The questions are: who ordered the unlawful invasion of the residence of a sitting state governor in violation of his constitutional immunity? Under what powers was the invasion ordered and what was the real motive?
Furthermore, what are the response of the Federal Government and the Police in guaranteeing the safety of Governor Darius Ishaku and his family members? Who is in custody of the valuables carted away from the residence by the invading operatives? Who takes responsibility for the damage caused to the residence of the Governor?
Until these questions are answered, the PDP and the people of Taraba state will continue to hold the APC and the Federal Government responsible for the invasion or should any harm suddenly befalls Governor Darius Ishaku, members of his family, officials of his government or officials of our party in Taraba state.
Nigerians across the board are all aware of the schemes by the APC to drag down Governor Darius Ishaku before and during the last governorship elections but for the overwhelming popularity he enjoys a, among his people due to his unprecedented achievements and developmental projects that touch directly on the wellbeing of the people of the state.
For emphasis, the people of Taraba state have elected Governor Ishaku as their governor and they stand solidly behind him. The APC and its agents should therefore a, therefore,o continue in his good works in the state.
Moreover, instead of this fixation on Governor Ishaku, the federal authorities should direct its energies in finding solution to the security challenges and persistent bloodletting ravaging Taraba and other states of the federation.
The APC administration should end its wild goose chase on PDP elected officials and focus its energy on confronting and routing the marauders, invaders, bandits and kidnappers, rs who have been pillaging our citizens.
Furthermore, now that nothing incriminating has been fohadin Governor Ishaku’s residence, can the federal authorities also proceed to search the residents of APC leaders, who have been accused of stashing stolen money in their houses as well as secret bank accounts within and outside Nigeria?
Can they also proceed to invite or search the residences of members of the cabal at the Presidency as well as former ministers in the Buhari’s administration, who as state governors have allegations of stealing public funds still hanging on their necks?
The PDP invites Nigerians to note that despite series of corruption allegations against the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole while serving as the Governor of Edo state; he has not been invited for questioning by the police, neither has his residence been searched by any security agency.
Besides, the Federal authorities has taken no steps to search any property belonging to an APC governor of one of the states of the North Central, who was accused of smuggling in and stockpiling military equipment ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Our party, therefore, urges the security agencies to note that their allegiance must stand with the law and the people of Nigeria. They should therefore r, therefore, pts by the APC and its agents to use them for its selfish agenda as in the case of the invasion of the residence of Governor Darius Ishaku.
Let it be known that the PDP and, of course, the people of Nigeria solidly stand with Governor Ishaku and all our elected officers as they operate above board in their commitment towards the welfare of Nigerians.
Our assurance is that our elected officers at all levels will never be intimidated or cowed to relent in their commitment to the people of Nigeria in line with the manifesto and ideology of our great party.
National Publicity Secretary
The attempt by theTaraba State Tiv Youth Forum to blame Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku for the Jukun/Tiv crisis is a gross display of ignorance by the group.
This was disclosed today 22/06/19 by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Bala Dan Abu.
According to the governor’s aide, the group, for example, alleged that Governor Ishaku visited a certain orphanage after the recent crisis in the area, a development they took to be a tacit support for the Jukun which is untrue and said that Governor Ishaku was not in the state at the time of the crisis and could not have possibly visited the orphanage and ignored the Tiv side.
Bala Abu said that the Taraba State Tiv Youth group also tried to accuse the Governor of supporting the Jukun to gain the upper hand in the crisis, referring to the insinuation as being callous.
“Every action of the Taraba State government under Ishaku has always been done in consultation with Governor Samuel Ortom, his Benue State counterpart and in the interest of peace among the two groups”.
“Governor Ishaku has not paid any private visit to the Jukun/Tiv centres of crises alone. There hasn’t been any official government intervention in the crisis that did not have the consent and support of the Government of Benue State”.
“The Taraba State government is disappointed that a group of Tiv youths is further stoking the fire of crisis between the two neighbours through false allegations and misrepresentation of facts. Governor Ishaku has made a lot of sacrifice towards the resolution of the crisis between the two groups in the past and would continue to do so until permanent peace is attained”.
The governor’s aide said that people on both sides have a duty to support the efforts of the governors of the two states to facilitate the process.
The fourteen hours curfew imposed by the Taraba State Government on Jalingo metropolis and surrounding villages at the wake of the fulani herdsmen evasion of some communities has been relaxed by two hours.
This was contained in a press release signed by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor, Mr. Iliya Bekyu Akweh.
Accordingly, the approved timing of the curfew is now 6pm to 6am as against the initial 4pm to 6pm daily.
To this end, the state government is again appealing to the security agencies in the state to ensure enforcement of the curfew.
Residents of Jalingo the state’s capital and surrounding villages especially those at the areas affected by the crisis are hereby directed to ensure strict compliance.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemns in totality, the invasion of the Abuja residence of Taraba state Governor, Arc. Darius Ishaku, by police operatives alleged to have been detailed by Presidential authorities.
This was contained in a Press Statement signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, stressing that the invasion was unlawful, provocative and cannot be justified under any guise whatsoever.
The PDP insisted that such assault on a governor’s residence was a direct attack on the nation’s democratic order and must not be swept under the carpet like previous invasions of residents of some PDP elected officials under the domineering All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
“Our party holds that the invasion of Governor Ishaku’s residence is criminal and in total violation of the spirit of the immunity clause under the 1999 Constitution (as amended); a desecration of the sanctity of the government house and a rude assault on the sensibility of the people of Taraba state and Nigerians in general”.
The PDP invites Nigerians to note that such invasion of the resident of an elected state governor is a direct pointer that our democracy is under attack by anti-democratic forces that seek to subvert the rule of law, foist a siege mentality on the citizenry and ultimately destabilize our nation for their selfish political gains.
The PDP therefore calls on the Inspector General of police to immediately fish out those behind the invasion and unravel their intensions.
The party also urges the police to beef up security around Governor Ishaku and his family members as well as take steps to forestall a repeat of such unwarranted attack.
The PDP however charges Governor Ishaku and all other officials elected on the platform of the party to remain undeterred in their commitment in serving the people despite the intimidations, harassments and distractions by the APC-led administration.
The Speaker, Taraba state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abel Peter Diah whole heartedly commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the order he gave to security men to end the violence that happened in some parts of the state’s capital some few days ago.

Abel Diah revealed that in pursuance of a crime free society in the state with particular interest in arresting the menace of kidnapping and abduction of persons which recently has become a common phenomenon in the state, the Taraba state House of Assembly seeks to amend “the Taraba state Kidnap and Abduction (Prohibition) law, 2010 (law No. 6)” to profer stiffer punishment for offenders.
He said that the amendment is intended to cover section 4, section 7 and section 12 respectively.
In the sought amendment, offenders would now suffer death sentence instead of 20 years imprisonment, collaborators with offenders would now suffer life imprisonment instead of 14 years imprisonment, while persons that conceal information about kidnappers and abductors will now suffer 20 years imprisonment without no option of fine.
The Speaker said the public hearing is meant to offer the general public, NGOs, legal experts, interest groups etc. the opportunity to enrich the amendment by their inputs, to enable the state address this wicked act ravaging our society and urged traditional rulers to know that they have a great responsibility in curtailing armed banditry, kidnapping and abduction by exposing these heinous crime operators in their domain stressing that government will not take it lightly if any traditional ruler is found concealing these criminals in his domain.
“This Honourable House remains committed to making laws for the good people of Taraba state and is determined to support His Excellency, Arc. Darius Dickon Ishaku at all-time in achieving peaceful coexistence in the state through quality legislation and law making”.
The Speaker thanked all present and wished all a successful participation in the public hearing.
