Taraba Had Fulfilled Its Financial Obligations to UBEC – Commissioner of Education

Taraba State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin

In a resolute demonstration of its commitment to education, the Taraba State Government has ensured the full payment of its counterpart funding to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), amounting to 1,395,784,959.14. This decisive action underscores the state’s unwavering dedication to supporting educational initiatives aimed at enhancing learning outcomes for its citizens.

The assertion comes in response to a legal suit filed by Barrister Femi Falana against the federal government and 36 states, including Taraba, regarding the non-payment of counterpart funding to institutions like UBEC. However, the Taraba State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, swiftly clarified the state’s position, affirming that Taraba had fulfilled its financial obligations to UBEC.

The payment, which was promptly made following Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas’s assumption of office in June 2023, exemplifies Taraba State’s proactive approach to education financing and its commitment to upholding its responsibilities.

Addressing concerns surrounding the legal action, the State Attorney General, Barr Maikasuwa Yakubu (SAN), emphasized that Taraba State’s diligent fulfillment of its obligations exempts it from inclusion in the suit. He further highlighted the state’s significant allocation of 24% of its 2024 budget to education, reaffirming its dedication to educational advancement.

Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas’s declaration of free education upon assuming office has yielded remarkable results, with the state witnessing a notable reduction in the number of out-of-school children and a staggering 300% increase in school enrollment since September. The ripple effects of this initiative extend beyond the classroom, with reports of Taraba indigenes relocating back to the state to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided, thereby bolstering economic activities within the state.
